Indianapolis Professional Football Team survives turnover woes to beat Texans 19-17

The Indianapolis Professional Football Team held on for a 19-17 win over the Houston Texans to secure its first victory of the 2026 season, overcoming a minus-three turnover differential that nearly cost the game. Daniel Jones lost two fumbles and threw an interception as the team failed to record a takeaway, yet timely plays on offense, defense and special teams preserved the result. The Indianapolis Professional Football Team noted in its release this was the first win with a minus-three or worse turnover differential since Dec. 12, 1999, and that teams were 3-41 when carrying that deficit since the start of the 2025 season.
Jones completed 66.7 percent of his passes and produced four throws that gained 20 or more yards. He said he needed to protect the ball better and called the turnovers costly for the team. On a down-to-down basis his passing was effective, but the turnovers forced other phases to make game-changing plays.
With wide receiver Alec Pierce sidelined and placed on injured reserve, Josh Downs’ offseason work with Jones translated into immediate production. Downs has 12 catches on 20 targets for 149 yards over the last two games, and his ability to get open and gain yards after the catch has made him a reliable option. Downs and Jones credited extra reps in the spring and at training camp for building their rapport.
Facing second-and-10 from the team 35-yard line while down by a point with 1:43 remaining, Jones delivered a 20-yard completion to Laquon Treadwell over the middle that set up the go-ahead field goal. The team credited pass protection and coordinated route combinations for giving Jones the space to make a velocity throw into traffic. Treadwell emphasized ball security after the catch and the reception marked consecutive weeks with a 20-plus-yard grab in a late-game moment.
Veteran defensive tackle DeForest Buckner anchored the defensive effort, setting the tone with a third-down sack on the Texans’ opening series and later teaming with Adetomiwa Adebawore and Jaylahn Tuimoloau on another sack. Buckner also made a run-stopping play early and finished the game with three sacks on the season, one fewer than his total through 10 games in 2025. Head coach Shane Steichen praised Buckner’s preparation and the work he has done returning from injury.
Special teams played a decisive role late. Spencer Shrader’s 53-yard field goal put the team ahead with 16 seconds remaining, and Rigoberto Sanchez 2 handling kickoffs while Shrader dealt with a pregame groin issue 2 forced a return that cost the Texans valuable clock. Houston began its final possession at its own 31 with 11 seconds remaining but could not reach field-goal range. Sanchez kicked a ball that bounced in the landing zone and then produced a touchback that left Houston at its own 20, and the team noted the Texans averaged starting kickoff-return drives at their own 27.4-yard line on the day.

The Indianapolis Professional Football Team won a game it realistically should not have when judging only the turnover margin, which highlights how complementary football carried the day. Daniel Jones delivered timely big plays but must eliminate forced turnovers to avoid relying on defensive and special-teams execution to win close games. Josh Downs’ emergence as a reliable target and DeForest Buckner’s disruptive play up front provide sustainable building blocks, while Rigoberto Sanchez’s kickoff work showed how field-position management can determine outcomes in the final seconds.
