Falcons sign DT Gervon Dexter Sr. to four-year contract extension

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to a four-year contract extension with defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr., the team announced on its transactions page on Sept. 30, 2026. Dexter was acquired in a trade late last month and the extension keeps him under contract beyond the 2026 season. The 6-foot-6, 326-pound defensive tackle will bolster Atlanta’s interior line. The agreement underscores the Falcons’ investment in a player obtained to help fortify the trench play.
Atlanta acquired Dexter on Aug. 30, 2026, when it traded cornerback Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Chicago Bears, according to the team’s transactions log. The trade was pending a completed physical at the time of the transaction. The move added size and depth to the Falcons’ defensive front.
Atlanta has made several roster moves around its defensive unit in recent weeks. The Falcons elevated outside linebacker Bralen Trice to the game-day roster on Sept. 24; it was his second elevation and a player can be elevated up to three times per season. On Sept. 23, Atlanta signed cornerback Robert Longerbeam off the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad after placing starting cornerback A.J. Terrell on injured reserve. Those moves reflect short-term adjustments to cover the secondary.
The club placed A.J. Terrell Jr. on injured reserve on Sept. 22 and signed defensive lineman Zach Harrison to the active roster in a corresponding move. Harrison had been elevated for the Falcons’ home opener on Sept. 19, which marked his 41st game for the Falcons. Atlanta also placed Da’Shawn Hand on injured reserve on Sept. 16 and signed tight end Nick Muse to the active roster while adding defensive end Drake Jackson and running back Khalil Herbert to the practice squad.

Locking up Gervon Dexter Sr. on a four-year extension signals Atlanta’s desire to stabilize the interior of its defensive line with a player acquired via trade this summer. The move comes as the Falcons juggle injuries in the secondary and along the defensive front, with both A.J. Terrell and A.J. Terrell Jr. on injured reserve and Zach Harrison promoted to the active roster. Atlanta’s recent use of practice-squad elevations and in-season signings, including Robert Longerbeam and Nick Muse, underscores a reliance on roster flexibility to cover short-term needs while the club builds depth around extended core pieces such as Dexter.
