Chiefs Defeat Raiders 30-27, Remain AFC’s Only Unbeaten Team at 4-0

The Kansas City Chiefs rallied in a wild finish to beat the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27 on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, remaining the AFC’s only unbeaten team at 4-0. Safety Xavier Nwankpa intercepted Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins on the penultimate play to clinch the victory. The win leaves Kansas City atop the AFC West as the team heads into its bye week before returning to host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6 at Arrowhead Stadium.
An absolutely wild final five minutes featured multiple lead changes and rapid scoring swings. Las Vegas took a two-point lead on a 48-yard field goal after a 60-yard drive, but Kansas City answered when Patrick Mahomes found Tyquan Thornton for a 55-yard gain to the Raiders’ 2-yard line. Thornton injured his ankle on the play and was carted off; he finished with five catches for a career-best 111 yards and two touchdowns. One snap later, Ken Walker punched the ball in from close range to put the Chiefs back in front.
Kansas City seized momentum on special teams when linebacker Jeffrey Bassa forced a fumble on a kickoff return by Dareke Young, setting up Walker’s second touchdown on a 22-yard run one play later. The two Walker scores came within 19 seconds of game action and helped Kansas extend its lead before Las Vegas mounted a late rally. Walker finished with 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 76-yard run late in the third quarter, and it marked his third game this season with 170-plus yards from scrimmage.
Patrick Mahomes completed 15 of 30 passes for 225 yards and two touchdown passes. Late, Kirk Cousins led the Raiders on a 1:16 drive capped by a 20-yard touchdown to Brock Bowers, and Kansas City initially recovered the onside kick but soon punted, giving Las Vegas one last chance. Punter Matt Araiza had earlier delivered a 52-yard kick that Emmett Johnson downed at the Raiders’ 1-yard line, and Nwankpa’s interception on the penultimate play ended the threat.
Reid said the Raiders are a good football team and that it would take four quarters of hard football to win. Wide receiver Rashee Rice also left Sunday with a hamstring issue. The Chiefs will use the bye week to recover and prepare for the Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City’s balance and resilience were on full display: a dominant ground game led by Walker, timely big plays from Mahomes and Thornton, and critical turnovers from the defense and special teams. The club improved to 4-0, but the ankle injury to Thornton and Rice’s hamstring issue are matters to monitor during the bye week. How those recoveries progress could influence the Chiefs’ preparation and personnel decisions heading into the Week 6 game against the Chargers.
