Paul Condry and Matt Kopsea wrote a feature on Oct. 16 about Lowell High junior running back Tymothy James, detailing his breakout season. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound running back has 239 touches for 1,753 yards and 21 touchdowns this season, according to the feature. The story said his wrestling and track experience have helped his speed, physicality and mental toughness on the football field.

James began wrestling around age 4 or 5 and started Pop Warner football in third grade, the story said. He has a 39-28 record wrestling at 175 pounds and ran a 400-meter personal-best time of 51.2 seconds as a freshman. His older siblings competed in football, cross country and track, and James credited them with influencing his athletic development.

The feature recapped several of James’ standout games, including a 50-carry, 394-yard, five-touchdown effort in a Sept. 25 win over Hobart that surpassed a school mark set by his brother, Ike. He also rushed for 356 yards and four touchdowns on 38 attempts against Hanover Central on Sept. 11 and had 312 yards and three scores on 54 attempts in an Oct. 9 win over Munster. As a sophomore, James ran 153 times for 1,303 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Lowell coach Casey McKim praised James’ speed, vision and finishing ability and said the staff is working to involve him more in the passing game. McKim said James reads blocks well, reaches top speed quickly and will get tough yards when needed. James acknowledged that adding size and strength and improving as a receiver are priorities, and the story noted he has 61 career tackles and a 3.3 grade-point average.

Lowell entered the Oct. 16 game against Andrean with a 6-2 record and the goal of winning the Northwest Crossroads Conference and a Class 4A sectional title the program has not won since 2021. The feature identified the Oct. 16 matchup at Father Eckert Field in Merrillville against No. 3 (Class 3A) and defending Class 2A state champion Andrean (7-1) as a key test for the Red Devils. James said the team is focused on consistency in practice and games as it pursues postseason goals.
