Chargers fall 23-17 to Broncos, drop to 0-5 after fourth-quarter collapse

The Los Angeles Chargers fell to the Denver Broncos 23-17 on Sunday and dropped to 0-5 after a fourth-quarter collapse. The Chargers held a 17-10 lead entering the fourth quarter before Denver rallied. A failed fourth-down attempt early in the final period opened the door for the Broncos to tie the game. Late turnovers and two short field goals decided the outcome.
Denver marched 41 yards for the game-tying score after the Chargers failed on fourth down early in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 17, Justin Herbert fumbled and Denver converted the turnover into a short Wil Lutz field goal. Herbert was intercepted on the Chargers’ ensuing possession, and the Broncos added another field goal. Los Angeles had one final chance, but Herbert was sacked on the final play of regulation in Denver territory.
The Chargers seized momentum late in the third quarter. Tuli Tuipulotu forced and recovered a fumble on Broncos quarterback Bo Nix at Denver’s 42-yard line. Kimani Vidal scored on the next play with a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Chargers their first lead. Earlier in the quarter, Los Angeles mounted a 14-play, 93-yard drive that ended with Hayden Rucci’s 7-yard touchdown catch, and the Chargers went 4-for-4 on third down during that possession.
Rucci’s 7-yard catch was his first career touchdown and came on his first NFL touch. The 25-year-old signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft, spent time on the practice squad the last two seasons and appeared in four games last season, recording a special teams tackle. The Chargers managed only a 42-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker and finished the first half with 74 yards of offense. Denver averaged 3.8 yards per play and converted one of six third downs before the third-quarter swing.
Denver’s scoring also included a 2-yard touchdown run by J.K. Dobbins and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Courtland Sutton. Wil Lutz accounted for three field goals (34, 19 and 37 yards), and Cameron Dicker kicked a 42-yard field goal for Los Angeles. The Chargers will travel to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6.

The Chargers showed they can manufacture big plays — the Tuipulotu forced fumble and the 14-play, 93-yard drive illustrated that — but they failed to protect the ball and convert when it mattered most. Two turnovers by Justin Herbert and a failed fourth-down gamble in the fourth quarter swung the game to Denver. The Chargers must prioritize ball security and situational decision-making as they head to Kansas City. If Los Angeles cannot limit giveaways and sustain drives in opponent territory, the slide will be difficult to arrest against a top offense.
