Rookie Akheem Mesidor has continued to expand his impact for the Los Angeles Chargers, the team reported Thursday, showing steady improvement through his first 5 NFL games. The No. 22 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft has 2.5 sacks, a total that ranks second on the Chargers and second among all first-year defensive players. He led all Chargers defenders in total tackles in his most recent outing and appears to be settling in as he receives more reps.

Mesidor has been active in multiple phases of the defense, totaling 22 tackles (third-most on the team), 2 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and 4 quarterback hits through 5 games. Pro Football Focus credited him with 5 run stops in that span, tying him for the second-most among rookie edge rushers, and listed 8 run-defense tackles that rank second at his position, the team wrote. Those numbers highlight his role as both a pass rusher and a run defender.

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said Mesidor is more than flash and is producing at a consistently high level. Defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary said Mesidor has grown more comfortable with the scheme and is playing faster and more aggressively. O’Leary added, “He’s trusting the scheme and then trusting himself to let it rip,” and said, “I think confidence comes from doing your job well. He’s playing good and now he’s getting confidence. It’s going to continue to stack.”

Mesidor said, “I feel like I’m progressing every week, day by day. The game is starting to slow down a little bit. I’m starting to get a little bit more comfortable,” and added that he still has work to do. He said he can “see myself play more freely as the weeks go on, thinking less and playing faster,” noting that earlier in the year he sometimes overthought things in the new system. On run defense he said, “My biggest thing is try to be as physical and as violent as you can” and, “That’s what I try to do every week, just play as hard as I can.”

Veteran edge Khalil Mack highlighted Mesidor’s intangibles, saying, “The different intangibles we need on the edge, speed, explosiveness, ability to get off blocks and tackles. His tackling is underrated, he’s a great tackler. His ability to get to the ball and hustle on the back side of plays, he chases stuff down. It’s impressive.” O’Leary said Mesidor sets a standard for effort from the beginning of the play to the finish, citing his pursuit on screens, sacks on retrace and general pursuit ability. Coaches point to his tackling and hustle as key reasons he has earned an expanded role.

Mesidor’s early production is notable for its breadth: he has contributed as a pass rusher, run defender and pursuit player, and both team totals and advanced metrics back that up. His 2.5 sacks and PFF-logged run stops indicate impact in areas the Chargers need from their edge group, and endorsements from coaches and Khalil Mack suggest the club views him as a growing core piece. If Mesidor sustains this trajectory while maintaining his effort-based play, he could become a consistent factor on the Chargers’ defense as the season progresses.
