Cowboys hire Mike Pettine as senior defensive assistant to support Christian Parker

FRISCO, Texas — Oct. 12, 2026 — Patrik Walker/DallasCowboys.com — The Dallas Cowboys added veteran coach Mike Pettine to their defensive staff on Oct. 12, 2026, naming him senior defensive assistant to support first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker, the team announced. Pettine, 60, had retired this past season but chose to return to coaching to join the Cowboys staff. The move was announced by the club as it continued to evaluate its coaching structure following recent struggles.
Brian Schottenheimer said the decision followed the club’s commitment to look at everything after the loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football. He described Pettine as a familiar, experienced voice who will support Parker and provide counsel across the defensive staff. Schottenheimer said the staff had considered multiple candidates, but some options did not work out for various reasons and the club declined to add someone who did not make sense.
Pettine brings decades of NFL coaching experience to Dallas. He has served as defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers and spent time helping Brian Flores build a strong Minnesota Vikings defense. Pettine also served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns earlier in his career, and he began his NFL coaching career around the turn of the century as a coaching assistant before moving to assistant defensive line coach and outside linebackers coach.
Schottenheimer said the Cowboys and Parker wanted a veteran sounding board familiar with the 3-4 family of fronts and with knowledge of several players on the roster, including Kenny Clark and Rashawn Gary. He noted Pettine had worked with Parker previously and that the hire was intended to help the entire staff, not just the defensive unit. Schottenheimer said Pettine had just returned from Italy, that family matters had kept him busy during his recent break, and that Pettine “should be in first thing tomorrow,” speaking on Oct. 12, 2026.

Bringing Mike Pettine onto the staff gives Dallas an experienced coordinator and former head coach who already understands elements of the defensive framework Christian Parker is installing. The hire addresses staff-level questions raised after the loss to Tampa Bay and adds a veteran perspective on 3-4 scheme nuances and player fit for pieces such as Kenny Clark and Rashawn Gary. Expect Pettine to serve largely as an advisory coach whose experience coordinating defenses could help the staff accelerate schematic adjustments in the weeks ahead.
