The Philadelphia Eagles signed quarterback Joe Milton from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad on Friday. The move requires the Eagles to add him to their active 53-man roster for at least three games. That guarantees Milton a chance to play against his former team when Dallas and Philadelphia meet on Monday Night Football in Week 7. The game is scheduled for Oct. 26.
The signing came a day after the Eagles ruled franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts out indefinitely after discovering a superficial blood clot in his leg. With Hurts’ timeline uncertain, the Eagles have turned to Tanner McKee to start in his absence. The club said Milton will compete for playing time with McKee and rookie Cole Payton. Milton’s addition gives the Eagles additional depth while they evaluate Hurts’ condition.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the move and called it a great opportunity for Milton. He said it did not surprise him and noted that people are aware of Hurts’ situation. Schottenheimer praised Milton’s talent and said he was sad to see him go but hoped Milton would get every opportunity.
Milton entered Dallas’ 2026 training camp aiming to earn the QB2 role, and his practices in Oxnard pushed Sam Howell, the Cowboys’ immediate backup to Dak Prescott. He appeared in the first two preseason games before struggling in the preseason finale, after which the Cowboys awarded Howell the backup nod. The Cowboys waived Milton during final roster cutdowns in late August and re-signed him to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.
The move leaves a vacancy on the Cowboys’ practice squad that the team will need to fill to provide an emergency quarterback behind Prescott and Howell. Milton, 26, arrived in Dallas via a 2025 trade from the New England Patriots that also included a swap of 2025 draft picks. There is a chance Milton and the Cowboys will square off on Oct. 26, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an unpredictable NFC East race.

Milton’s signing gives the Eagles immediate depth at quarterback while they evaluate Hurts’ condition and provides an experienced option who can be activated for at least three games. For Dallas, losing Milton reduces depth behind Dak Prescott and Sam Howell and forces the team to replenish its practice-squad quarterback room. If Milton is active for the Week 7 Monday night meeting, the matchup will carry narrative weight but will hinge on how quickly the Eagles integrate him and what roles McKee and Payton assume in Hurts’ absence.
