Raiders vs. Jets: Las Vegas Seeks a Road Reset

The Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets meet Sunday with both teams looking for an answer to a frustrating stretch. Las Vegas has fallen to 3-4 after four consecutive losses, while New York enters at 2-5 after losing its past two games. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium is set for 1 p.m. EST on FOX. 12
The records do not fully describe the quarterback play or the problems around it. Both offenses have generated scoring opportunities, yet neither team has consistently finished games well enough. Sunday offers a chance to change that pattern against an opponent facing a similar demand for better execution.
Veteran quarterbacks need support
Geno Smith entered the week completing 70% of his passes, while Kirk Cousins had thrown 16 touchdown passes and accumulated 1,877 passing yards. The Jets' official matchup discussion identified both veterans as important reasons their teams remain competitive. That makes the surrounding protection and defensive execution especially relevant to the outcome. 3
Smith faces a familiar individual challenge in Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby. New York's tackles need to keep the edge of the pocket stable enough for Smith to deliver without repeatedly resetting his feet. The Jets can help by varying the launch point, changing their protection help and avoiding predictable long-yardage situations.
The Raiders need to create similar stability for Cousins. Their passing production becomes harder to maintain if New York can ignore the running game and devote its coverage to the most dangerous targets. A useful rushing contribution would not have to dominate the box score to change how the Jets defend the next snap.
Bowers creates a coverage challenge
Brock Bowers is essential to New York's preparation because Las Vegas can deploy him as a receiving threat from multiple alignments. The Jets' matchup report highlighted his vertical receiving production and the Raiders' extensive use of two-tight-end personnel. That combination forces the defense to account for formation strength and the possibility of a downfield passing concept. 3
New York should avoid making the same defender solve every Bowers alignment alone. Coverage exchanges, safety assistance and timely pressure can reduce his available space. The important detail is communicating those adjustments cleanly enough that the response does not open a different receiver elsewhere.
Las Vegas can make the assignment harder by changing formations without changing personnel. That lets the Raiders test whether New York treats a two-tight-end grouping as a running look or a passing formation. The quarterback's recognition of the response can be as important as the first play called in the huddle.
New York has a rushing opportunity
The Raiders' preview listed a defense allowing 143.6 rushing yards and 28.1 points per game. New York's official reporting also highlighted Braelon Allen's recent rushing production and the offense's season-high 25 points in its loss at Miami. Those details suggest the Jets should give the ground game a substantial role rather than default to a passing contest. 12
Thursday's injury report showed Bowers returning to full participation after a calf listing. Breece Hall remained limited with a quadriceps issue, while Allen practiced fully after an ankle listing. Those developments belong in the preparation picture, although they do not replace the final game-status report. 4
Brian's Take
The Raiders have the passing ability to make this difficult for New York, but their defensive consistency and rushing support need to improve. The Jets have an opportunity to use Allen and an efficient offense to keep the game on manageable terms. I will watch whether New York protects Smith against Crosby and whether Las Vegas gives Cousins enough balance to avoid a predictable afternoon. The team that turns its quarterback production into sustained execution should have a chance to end a disappointing stretch.
