The Los Angeles Chargers fell 24-16 at the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and dropped to 0-3. The Chargers forced turnovers and avoided penalties for much of the game. They still could not convert enough of those possessions into points, which cost them the road contest. The loss leaves the club staring at an early-season hole as October approaches.

Defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe punched the ball loose on Buffalo’s first play, and linebacker Daiyan Henley recovered. Rookie safety Genesis Smith intercepted Josh Allen on consecutive drives in the first half. Cornerback Tarheeb Still forced a fumble on Dalton Kincaid that safety Tony Jefferson recovered, and edge rusher Khalil Mack strip-sacked Allen early in the fourth quarter; officials reversed the call after coach Jim Harbaugh’s challenge, and Henley recovered that fumble as well.

The Chargers converted only the opening takeaway into an immediate touchdown when quarterback Justin Herbert connected on a 1-yard scoring pass to Keaton Mitchell. Genesis Smith’s first interception set up a 31-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker, and the offense failed to produce touchdowns on the subsequent three turnovers. Los Angeles managed six points on five second-half possessions and has scored 16 points in each game this season.

Harbaugh said the team showed fight but acknowledged it has not been good enough. Quarterback Justin Herbert expressed frustration with the 0-3 start and placed responsibility on himself. Other offensive players echoed that sentiment, saying the unit must convert turnovers into touchdowns if the Chargers hope to win.

The Chargers are one of four AFC teams at 0-3, along with the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans. Los Angeles will try to regroup in Week 4 on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. The club will need improved red-zone execution and better scoring efficiency to change its early-season trajectory.

The Chargers’ defense provided a lift with five turnovers against one of the league’s top offenses. The offense converted those takeaways into just one touchdown and a field goal, leaving too many points on the field. Until the offense improves its scoring efficiency, particularly on turnover-driven possessions and in the red zone, the team will struggle to turn strong defensive outings into wins.
