Browns officials wrote on the team’s website that the Cleveland offensive line is preparing for a stiff challenge in Week 4, when it will face a Pittsburgh pass rush that includes former Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Watt’s 3.5 sacks this season are tied for fourth in the NFL, Highsmith’s three are tied for eighth, and Pittsburgh’s eight sacks are tied for sixth in the NFL. The matchup arrives in the Browns’ first divisional game of the season. The Browns rebuilt their front with five new starters in the offseason, and that unit will be tested on Thursday night.

Guard Zion Johnson emphasized that the unit is focused on technique and assignments while continuing to build chemistry. The offensive line has worked to establish cohesion after the offseason overhaul, and the emphasis in practice has been on fundamentals and physicality. Johnson said the group is treating the Steelers as an experienced, well-coached front that requires precise execution.

Spencer Fano said facing high-level edge rushers every week has accelerated his development and that he must continue improving to win his individual matchups. Fano pointed to Highsmith’s quickness and variety of pass-rush moves as particular challenges. Tytus Howard said Watt plays at a different pace than many opponents and noted that Watt may use unorthodox rushes, including cutting inside on an edge rush.

Howard said he was flagged for three false starts in Week 3 and will work to better time his snaps. Limiting pre-snap penalties and other self-inflicted errors has become a focal point for the line entering the divisional matchup. The Browns said reducing mistakes at the line of scrimmage will be essential to give their quarterbacks time and sustain offensive drives.

The Browns must also account for interior disruption from four-time AllPro firstteam defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, who had three quarterback hits and four passes defensed through the first three games. Containing Heyward on the inside and matching speed and technique on the edges will be key for Cleveland’s front. Coaches and players indicated the plan is to rely on the unit’s strengths while remaining disciplined against a veteran Pittsburgh defensive front.

NFL Sports Blog Take

The Browns’ offensive line faces a clear measuring stick against a Steelers front that ranks among the NFL leaders in sacks and features multiple Pro Bowl-caliber rushers. Continuity remains a work in progress after Cleveland’s offseason changes, so eliminating false starts and executing clean assignments will be as important as individual blocking matchups. If the Browns can shorten the quarterback’s decision time with crisp protection and quick looks, they can blunt the Steelers’ edge pressure; otherwise, Pittsburgh’s established pass rushers are positioned to create disruption.
