The Los Angeles Chargers closed their 2026 training camp Tuesday, conducting the 20th and final practice of the period, the team reported on its official site. Coaches used the session and the preseason finale to evaluate depth, finalize position battles and begin shaping the 53-man roster. The evaluations will inform decisions as the club approaches roster cutdowns ahead of the regular season.

Quarterback Justin Herbert continued to work in Mike McDaniel’s new offense, and the team announced he will start the preseason finale against the Rams. Herbert also connected with Quentin Johnston on a 65-yard touchdown during the preseason finale, the starting offense’s long scoring play of the exhibition slate. He will see action in the preseason for a second consecutive week as coaches evaluate the offense in live game settings.

On the offensive line, rookie Jake Slaughter earned praise from coordinator Mike McDaniel as he transitioned to the full-time starting center role. Pro Bowl left tackle Rashawn Slater returned to practice during camp. The left-guard spot remained a rotation with multiple players taking reps as coaches assessed the group. Coaches rotated several players at the position, including Branson Taylor, Kayode Awosika and Trey Pipkins III, as the staff searched for the best combination ahead of roster decisions.

Defensive standouts emerged throughout camp. Edge rushers Tuipulotu, Mesidor and Mack were among those highlighted for strong showings, and the defense earned several practice-day nods late in camp. The staff also pointed to the development and leadership of linebacker Daiyan Henley, who has taken on a signal-calling role within the unit.

Several young players and recent draft additions flashed during practices and preseason action. Wide receiver Brenen Thompson and safety Genesis Smith made plays throughout camp, and offensive-line rookies Travis Burke and Alex Harkey drew praise for their progress. Running back Omarion Hampton received positive attention for his fit in McDaniel’s scheme, and other young skill players continued to show growth. Players such as KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Amar Johnson also posted notable preseason performances.

With camp concluded and the preseason finale providing further tape, the Chargers enter roster cutdowns with clearer pecking orders at center and on the edge, but with contested spots at left guard and on the backup quarterback depth chart. Justin Herbert’s work in McDaniel’s system and the return of Rashawn Slater to practice are encouraging for an offense that must find continuity under a new coordinator. Defensive playmaking from the front seven and growth from several young skill players give Los Angeles options when shaping the final roster, though coaches will still need to make tough decisions as the team trims toward 53.
