The Philadelphia Eagles will take the field for their Week 8 Sunday night rematch with the Washington Commanders, the team’s official site reported. Dave Spadaro wrote on the Eagles’ official site Oct. 29 that the roster looks markedly different from the Week 1 opener. The club has endured a cascade of injuries, a high-profile trade and an unexpected retirement in the first seven weeks of the season. Those changes have left the Eagles 2-5 and searching for a victory in a key NFC East matchup.

Spadaro wrote that the team placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve and traded center Cam Jurgens to Baltimore. Right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement weeks after the opener. The report said wide receiver DeVonta Smith is sidelined with a hamstring issue and Dontayvion Wicks is working his way back from an ankle injury. Spadaro also noted changes on the opposing side, saying Washington missed quarterback Jayden Daniels for two games and placed wide receiver Terry McLaurin on injured reserve.

With Hurts sidelined, Spadaro wrote that Tanner McKee, who was the No. 3 quarterback on opening day, could be under center Sunday night. The running back room has seen turnover as well; Spadaro said Saquon Barkley is uncertain to play because of hamstring and back issues. He wrote that the team placed Dameon Pierce on injured reserve and could turn to Elijah Mitchell and Jaydon Blue as the sixth and seventh rushers to carry the ball this season. Barkley emphasized the next-man-up mentality, telling Spadaro, “Never an excuse because every team goes through that.”

Spadaro reported the Eagles have given significant snaps to younger players and recent draft picks as injuries have mounted. He noted rookie Makai Lemon was the main target Monday night with seven receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Third-round pick Markel Bell has played in every game and is in line to start his fifth game on Sunday night, and second-round selection Eli Stowers saw his first action Monday and is healthy after recovering from a preseason issue. Head coach Nick Sirianni told Spadaro that when young players get reps they continue to get better.

The attrition has forced the 53-man roster and practice squad to be used extensively, with the Eagles adding players on a week-to-week basis to fill gaps, Spadaro wrote. He cited examples such as bringing in veteran tight end Zach Ertz for short-term depth. Cornerback Riq Woolen told Spadaro the team has responded by becoming closer and focusing on teamwork despite the challenges. No matter who lines up Sunday night, the Eagles will not resemble the group that opened the 2026 season at Lincoln Financial Field, the report said.

The Eagles’ Week 8 rematch with the Washington Commanders will test how well the club adapts to abrupt personnel losses across key positions. With Hurts on injured reserve and major changes on the offensive line after the Jurgens trade and Johnson’s retirement, protection and run-game continuity are immediate concerns. Rookies and young receivers such as Makai Lemon, Markel Bell and Eli Stowers have been thrust into larger roles and must sustain production while the coaching staff leans on the practice squad for depth. Philadelphia’s 2-5 record increases the urgency of Sunday night’s outcome and the team’s ability to execute with an overhauled roster will determine its standing in the NFC East in the near term.
