Quay Walker: Raiders focusing on communication, technique and turnovers ahead of Bills
Linebacker Quay Walker said the Las Vegas Raiders are concentrating on communication, technique and assignment discipline as they prepare for their Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills at Allegiant Stadium. In a Silver and Black Show interview with Amber Theoharis published on the team site, Walker said limiting explosive plays and containing the quarterback are primary emphases for the defense. He said the unit aims to keep the ball in front of defenders, rally to the football and avoid assignments that create big plays. That approach, he added, is intended to put the defense in position to complement the offense.
Walker said forcing takeaways has been an identity the Raiders built since organized team activities (OTAs), and he said the club counts turnovers in practice each day. He said the team does not expect to stumble into takeaways on game day but cultivates them through deliberate practice of ball skills. Walker emphasized that communication and technique, including pre-snap alignment and recognition, help defenders play faster and limit explosive plays. He indicated that consistent execution of individual responsibilities will be necessary to restore the earlier style of play.
Walker described the chemistry he has with linebacker Nakobe Dean, saying the pair picked up where they left off from their time together at Georgia and still study film and meet in the linebackers room. He credited that shared routine with smoothing the transition back to playing alongside one another in the NFL. Walker said fishing with his grandfather helps clear his mind when his thoughts are racing, and he mentioned watching versatile, hard-hitting linebackers growing up, specifically citing Alec Ogletree, and said his time at Georgia under Coach Kirby Smart prepared him for the NFL.
On preparing for Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Walker said defenders must make constant situational judgments because of Allen’s ability to hurt defenses with both his arm and his legs. He noted that a linebacker must decide whether to pursue the quarterback or stay in coverage to avoid creating openings for big plays. Walker called running back James Cook a multifaceted threat, praising his route running, running ability and body control. He added that the defense must get off the field on third down and win early downs to force more third-and-long situations.

Walkers remarks underscore that the Raiders are addressing both schematic and technical issues by stressing communication, sound technique and situational discipline ahead of a tough Week 6 test against Buffalo. His emphasis on practiced takeaways since organized team activities (OTAs) suggests the defense is attempting to restore an identity built around turnovers and limiting explosive plays. The renewed on-field rapport with Nakobe Dean and a daily routine of shared film study could help the linebackers react more consistently to Buffalo’s multiheaded offensive threats. Ultimately, execution of fundamentals and third-down stops will determine whether the Raiders can control the game.
