The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday night at Levi’s Stadium, remaining unbeaten after holding off a determined second-half comeback. Christian McCaffrey scored two rushing touchdowns, and San Francisco’s defense protected the result with two late stops. The 49ers improved to 6-0, while Washington fell to 1-4-1 after another game in which a slow start created too much work for its finish.[1][2]

How the game turned

San Francisco carried a 20-3 lead into halftime and extended the margin to 23-3 early in the third quarter. Brock Purdy connected with George Kittle for a touchdown, while McCaffrey’s scoring helped the 49ers establish control. Mike Evans supplied important receiving gains before leaving with an Achilles issue, a development that added concern to the victory.[1][2]

Jayden Daniels led Washington’s response, completing 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring passes to Stefon Diggs and Rachaad White reduced the deficit and gave the Commanders a realistic opportunity to threaten the lead. Washington’s defense also improved after halftime, helping create the possessions needed to make the final minutes competitive.[3][4]

Key performances and context

Malik Mustapha supplied one of the decisive defensive plays by breaking up a fourth-down pass near the goal line. Washington received another late opportunity, but Romello Height and Keion White combined for an 18-yard sack as the clock expired. Those stops allowed San Francisco to preserve a six-point advantage after its offense had stopped creating the separation seen earlier.[1]

The Commanders also lost Terry McLaurin to an apparent knee injury, making the evening’s consequences extend beyond the final score. Their rally showed that Daniels and the offense could respond, but penalties and early defensive problems helped create the 20-point hole. San Francisco’s team report identified the victory as its 56th Monday night win, giving the franchise the most in league history while keeping its perfect start intact.[1][2]

NFL Sports Blog Take

San Francisco’s early offense and late defense combined to protect an unbeaten record, but the 49ers should take the second-half slowdown seriously. A strong contender needs more than one way to win, and the defensive finish demonstrated that flexibility. Washington has reason to value the response led by Daniels, yet the Commanders need cleaner starts and healthier personnel to turn competitive losses into meaningful progress.
