The NFL announced Monday that it has suspended Buffalo safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson for one game for an act of unsportsmanlike conduct during the Bills’ Week 6 victory. The league said Gardner-Johnson spat at an opponent in the second quarter, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, and he was ejected from the game; he may appeal the suspension and would miss Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens if the discipline stands. Head coach Joe Brady said he addressed the incident with Gardner-Johnson, that the matter was discussed during the team meeting, and that the organization will not impose additional internal discipline beyond the league’s ruling. Brady added that Gardner-Johnson remains a member of the Buffalo Bills and must improve his conduct moving forward.

Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard credited the secondary for responding well after the ejection and for making key plays in critical moments. Leonhard singled out veteran safety Damar Hamlin and rookie Jalon Kilgore for stepping into larger roles and steadying the unit during the game. Slot corner Dee Alford played through an ankle issue and logged roughly 40 snaps, Leonhard said, and multiple players adjusted coverage responsibilities effectively. The coordinator added that the group won several one-on-one situations that helped preserve the win.

Leonhard also praised cornerback Davison Igbinosun for his recent play, saying he has earned a high majority of snaps at the boundary corner. Igbinosun tied for third among all defensive players in Week 6 with three pass breakups, Leonhard noted. Hamlin finished the game with six total tackles, and the veteran made two open-field stops that prevented potential touchdowns. Kilgore played 10 snaps in dime coverage, broke up a third-down pass and nearly intercepted a late pass, giving the staff more positive tape on the rookie’s situational play.

The Bills enter their bye week with optimism about the status of injured contributors. Wide receiver D.J. Moore (shoulder) and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (knee) have missed the last two games, but Brady said the hope and intent is for both to be back next week. Tight end Dalton Kincaid and outside linebacker Bradley Chubb briefly left Week 6 with rib issues but returned to finish the game, according to Brady. Chubb’s limited time opened a door for rookie outside linebacker T.J. Parker, who played a season-high 50 snaps and compiled four tackles, two quarterback pressures and one quarterback hit.

The suspension of C.J. Gardner-Johnson creates a short-term personnel gap, but the Bills demonstrated adaptability against the Raiders as veterans and younger players stepped into expanded roles. Davison Igbinosun’s recent play and Jim Leonhard’s willingness to give him a large snap share provide continuity at boundary corner, while Damar Hamlin’s steadying presence highlights Buffalo’s depth in the secondary. The bye week gives the Bills time to work toward integrating D.J. Moore and Ed Oliver back into their units, and continued contributions from players such as Jalon Kilgore and T.J. Parker will be important if Gardner-Johnson’s appeal is denied.
